The Harley-Davidson Sportster traces its roots to 1957 as the XL, Ironhead using a 1,000 cc Ironhead overhead-valve engine with cast iron heads. As time marched forward, Harley-Davidson implemented several new changes including the introduction of the new “Evolution” engine in 1986, an all-new five speed transmission in 1991, an electronic speedometer replacing the old-school mechanical one in 1995, fuel injection in 2007, and optional ABS, keyless entry, larger brakes, and an increased engine compression ratio in 2014.
While the legacy of the Sportster saga was born in 1957, the all-new 2021 Sportster S has been rebuilt to the blow away the standards of today. The heart of the bike is, of course, the all-new V-Twin Revolution Max engine which is a liquid-cooled powertrain with double overhead camshafts and variable valve timing pumping out 121 horsepower and 94 ft. lbs. of torque. This offers ample torque and an immediate powerband tuned to maximize rider control and comfort.
Harking back to the glory days of Harley-Davidson flat-track racing, the high mount exhaust pipes are developed using corrosion-resistant 304-series stainless steel and have been engineered to deflect exhaust heat away from the rider’s legs and tail section.
The new instrumentation of the Harley-Davidson Sportster S is now centrally located in a Bluetooth®-equipped, 4” round thin-film transistor LCD display. You have at your fingertips everything including digital gauges, indicators, various ride modes, and turn-by-turn navigation. These functions can be accessed by buttons on both the left- and right-hand controls.
Riders looking to alternate ride modes can, at the push of a button, choose from three pre-programmed Ride Modes including Sports, Road, and Rain. Riders also have the option of creating their own custom mode which allows you to tune your bike to your exact specifications of power delivery, engine braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS), and Cornering Traction Control System (C-TCS) settings.
Significant weight savings of the new Sportster S also help push the performance boundaries to new heights. The Revolution® Max 1250T is a structural component of the motorcycle chassis, eliminating a traditional frame. This provides critical weight reduction to keep handling crisp and precise with a low center of gravity and super rigid chassis.
